Drama scheme to cut crew attacks
New fire engines
The scheme aims to reduce anti-social behaviour
Firefighters will use drama for the first time to cut firesetting, hydrant vandalism and attacks on crews.

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue's north east Glasgow team has launched its latest youth engagement initiative.

About 75 schools across the north east area will see a new play called "Choices" highlighting the consequences of anti-social behaviour.

The play uses a method called forum theatre which allows the audience to participate in the actual performance.

Once pupils have watched the play they then have the opportunity to replay key scenes where the characters have made bad choices.

Kickstart Theatre' s Rob Kane said: "We feel that this method of drama is integral when dealing with social issues.

"It takes young people out of their own social consciousness and lets them realise the effects of their actions, not only on themselves, but also in the wider community."

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue's north east Glasgow area manager, Steve King, said: "We have around 200 secondary fires every month in north east Glasgow.

"That is bin fires, rubbish fires, fires started in closes. Most of these are deliberate. Most of them are started by young people.

"In addition we have around 1,000 vandalised hydrants each summer. Across a relatively small area - four stations - this causes real danger to our community.

"This play can help young people realise the dangers of their actions."
