Two drivers die in road accidents

Two men have died in separate road accidents in the west of Scotland.

David Matthews, 28, from Carmyle, was killed after his car was involved in a crash on the Kingston Bridge in Glasgow at about 0140 GMT on Saturday.

He was taken to the Southern General Hospital but died a short time later. A 20-year-old passenger sustained minor injuries.

A later crash near Larkhall involving a car and a lorry resulted in the death of Darren Kirkland, 24, from Wishaw.

He died at the scene of the crash, which took place at about 1125 GMT on the A71 east of Canderside Toll.

The driver of the lorry was uninjured.

'Lost control'

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact Motherwell police station.

The earlier accident took place on Glasgow's Kingston Bridge as the Subaru car was travelling southbound.

Police said it appeared that Mr Matthews's vehicle lost control and struck the crash barrier.

Any witnesses to the crash have been asked to contact the road policing department at the Helen Street police station.

A report is being sent to the procurator fiscal.
