The Queen has toured the exhibits at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow during a special visit to mark its 28m overhaul.

Her Majesty was joined by the Duke of Edinburgh at the venue which has attracted almost a million people since it reopened in July.

They spent about three hours at the venue meeting benefactors and staff before attending a private lunch.

A crowd of about 200 people gathered outside to watch the Queen's arrival.

Great institution

The Queen gave a brief speech calling the refurbishment a "fine achievement".

She said: "Today we have seen something of the transformation which the imagination, support and labours of so many have brought about amid the wider renaissance taking hold in the city.

"As well as preserving the fabric and spirit of this great institution, the project has provided an opportunity to increase the scope and scale of the exhibitions of Kelvingrove's remarkable civic collection.

"I am confident, therefore, that this restoration will not only preserve a degree of familiarity for those innumerable Glaswegians with long and happy memories of this place as it was, but also, in its splendid new state, fascinate and educate old and new visitors for many generations to come."

I'm sure the Queen has been very impressed with what she has seen.

Glasgow City Council leader

The vice chairman of Kelvingrove's refurbishment appeal, Sir Robert Smith, said the royal occasion marked another fantastic day for the museum.

He said: "It's just terrific. We always knew there was going to be a royal visit, and this really sets the seal on the museum's rebirth."

Glasgow City Council leader Steven Purcell added: "I'm sure the Queen has been very impressed with what she has seen.

"It's a fitting tribute to the jewel in Glasgow's cultural crown that Her Majesty has come to officially reopen Kelvingrove."

Both the Queen and the Duke met dozens of staff and schoolchildren from across the city during their tour of the galleries.

Hillhead High School student Patricia Kameni, 12, said: "She just asked if I liked the art gallery and said it was very nice."
