Five schools in Edinburgh are on a disrepair shortlist

A total of 13.5m is set to be spent on repairs at five Edinburgh schools which are waiting to be rebuilt.

The city council had placed the schools on a shortlist due to their state of disrepair.

It was decided in December that Portobello High School would be the first to rebuilt at a cost of 41.5m.

The local authority has now identified funding which would allow essential maintenance to be carried out at all five schools.

The work is due to be approved at next week's budget meeting.

Marilyne MacLaren, Edinburgh City Council's convener of education, said: "When the council agreed in December that we would go ahead with the new Portobello High School I gave a commitment that we try to identify the funding for the essential maintenance works required at all five schools.

"I am pleased to announce that having looked at the funding available in our capital budget, although this has not been easy, we have found a way to meet in full the essential improvement costs that were identified for the four schools in the December 2008 report.

"In addition, we will carry out the works necessary at Portobello required to keep it operating during the construction period for the new school.

"I know this news will be welcomed by parents and staff at all of the schools who had concerns about the future of their buildings and I am delighted that we have been able to secure this funding for them which will allow improvements to take place until we can fund new buildings."

The council is to spend 3.5m at Portobello High School, 2.9m at Boroughmuir High School, 5.5m at James Gillespie's High School, 912,000 at St John's Primary School and 646,000 at St Crispin's Special School.

It has been estimated that it could take up to 14 years for all five schools to be rebuilt.
