New moderator appointed by Kirk

Bill Hewitt
Rev Hewitt will take up the post next May

A Robert Burns enthusiast is to be the new moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, it has been announced.

The Reverend William Hewitt, 57, minister of Westburn Church in Greenock, was chosen as moderator-designate.

The minister is a former president of the 200-year-old Greenock Burns Club and a frequent speaker at Burns events.

The married father-of-three was born and educated in Kilmarnock.

He studied accountancy at Strathclyde University before receiving his call to the Church and served for two years as probationer assistant at Castlehill Church, Ayr, where he was ordained in 1977.

Rev Hewitt was then called to Elderslie Kirk in Johnstone where he served for 16 years before moving to Greenock in 1994.

He will replace Rev David Lunan at the Kirk's next general assembly in May 2009.
