Glasgow woman on cocaine charge
Caracas
Caracas, where Irene Campbell was arrested
A social worker from Glasgow, allegedly caught with about 500,000 worth of cocaine, faces months in a South American jail while authorities decide if they will prosecute.

Irene Campbell is being detained in a prison on the Venezuelan island of Margarita after a police operation last week.

If convicted, she could face 20 years in jail, according to reports.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: "She is being held in a prison on the island and has been visited by honorary consul.

"She is doing as well as can be expected.

"We have given her a list of local lawyers and the next stage will be bringing the case to trial, if the public prosecutor decides to prosecute."

Mrs Campbell, a grandmother from the Pollok area, was visiting the South American country on holiday.

She is reported to have first visited Venezula two years ago and liked the country so much, she decided to return.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council confirmed she worked as a social worker but said the local authority had not been contacted over her arrest.

Mrs Campbell, a divorcee with four daughters and a son, was held while trying to board a flight.

Her family had been expecting her back from her two-week holiday last Wednesday but found out about her arrest from the Foreign Office on Friday.

Mrs Campbell was due back at her job at the city council's Shawbridge children's project on Monday.
