Dr Alison Elliot
Dr Elliot has said she is looking forward to the post
The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has confirmed its first ever female moderator.

Dr Alison Elliot, 54, of Greyfriars Tolbooth and Highland Kirk, has become the first elder to be nominated as moderator since the 16th century.

It is understood she will forego the traditional buckles and britches of her predecessors.

This year's General Assembly began on Saturday and will run until Friday, 21 May.

Dr Elliot was born in Edinburgh and educated at Bathgate Academy and Edinburgh University.

She went on to gain a PhD in Children's Language Development from Edinburgh University.

Her work with the Kirk has included the convenership of the Church and Nation Committee.

The role of moderator is an honorary one, held for 12 months.

After the assembly, the moderator will spend much of the rest of her time in office travelling as a Kirk representative in Scotland, the UK, Ireland and overseas.
