Voluntary sector gets funding boost

The Scottish Executive is to announce details of a 39m spending programme for the voluntary sector in Scotland.

The increase is in recognition of the sector's significance.

The executive now sees the voluntary sector as a vital social partner in a large number of areas, from disability to childcare, and from drugs to the environment.

According to Social Justice Minister Jackie Baillie, the money will be used to provide help, advice and services to the people of Scotland.

The 39m funding is an increase of 16m on the level of two years ago, the minister said.

One of the biggest recipients will be Victim Support Scotland which will receive 2.7m.

The organisation is an important part of the Scottish Strategy for Victims and is helping to give those affected by crime a role at the heart of the criminal justice system.

Last year, the Millennium Volunteers project was launched in Scotland to encourage more young people to get involved in the sector.

A personal plan and free training for volunteers in the 16 to 25-year-old age group, aimed to develop skills and experiences, and provide people with challenging work experience.

In January, Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown pledged that the UK Government would spend 300m over three years to boost the voluntary sector.

Mr Brown said he hoped the money would be devolved back from Whitehall to local communities.
