Family wants action over police shooting

The family of a Scots grandfather, shot dead by police in London three years ago, has taken its campaign for justice north of the Border.

Firearms officers killed Harry Stanley, 46, yards from his home in Hackney in 1999.

Mr Stanley, who was unarmed and carrying the mended leg from a coffee table, was allegedly mistaken for an Irishman carrying a sawn-off shotgun.

An inquiry into the shooting cleared the officers involved but Mr Stanley's family and friends want them tried for unlawful killing.

Harry Stanley was shot dead 50 yards from his home in Hackney, east London, by two officers from Scotland Yard's SO19 armed response unit.

He had been carrying a wooden coffee table leg in a plastic bag, which the police believed to be a sawn-off shotgun.

In September 1999, Glasgow-born Mr Stanley visited a London pub carrying a bag with a broken coffee table leg inside, which he was repairing.

Someone in the pub, who suspected he had a shotgun in the bag and that he sounded Irish, called the police.

Later that day Harry Stanley was confronted and shot dead by officers from Scotland Yard's SO19 armed response unit.

'Further investigation'

After an inquiry by Surrey Police the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided not to try the officers.

A CPS spokesman said the decision could be reversed should new evidence emerge.

The Stanley family and supporters have since been calling for further investigation of what they believe was an unlawful killing.

They have now brought their campaign for justice to Scotland and will lobby MSPs at Holyrood.
