Desperately seeking safety The programme, broadcast on 5 June, reports on the conflict in Glasgow's Springburn area between local residents and asylum seekers. Refugees in the area say they have been subjected to physical and verbal abuse from local people. But residents claim that their concerns have been ignored by the authorities and they are being made scapegoats for a problem they have no control over. Wish you were here The programme on 29 May reports on how tourist businesses in Scotland are demanding help to revive their trade.
It points to growing disillusionment with visitscotland, formerly the Scottish Tourist Board. The foot-and-mouth crisis is the latest in a series of setbacks for the industry, which has seen visitor numbers fall steadily since the mid-1990s. Gerry Dowds of the Forum for Private Business says the time has come to take responsibility away from visitscotland. Visitscotland chairman Peter Lederer accepts that tourism is going through a difficult period, but argues that the foot-and-mouth crisis could provide the springboard to revitalise the industry. The Shooting of Harry Stanley Harry Stanley was shot dead in a London street by police officers. The Scottish grandfather was mistaken for an Irishman carrying a shotgun. In fact, he was carrying a newly mended coffee table leg. There have been no charges against the policemen who killed him, and no explanation or apology for his widow and three children. Sex bomb Scotland is in the grip of a silent sexual epidemic, and many are unaware of the risks they are taking. In some areas clinics are finding one in four young women are infected by the chlamydia bacteria that could make them infertile and could be associated with the development of cancer. Getting Away With Murder The murder of Surgit Singh Chhokar in Lanarkshire has become one of the most controversial cases in Scottish legal history. Three men were accused of attacking Mr Chhokar, who bled to death from multiple stab wounds, but all of them walked free from murder charges. Frontline Scotland asks - was there a racist cover up behind these walls? Or, was it simply incompetence that led to the killer of Surgit Singh Chhokar walking free? Tricks and Mortar On the face of it, buying a brand new house should be one of the most stress-free ways of moving home but it seems this is not the case and especially in Scotland. A UK survey has found Scots who buy new homes are the most likely to be unhappy with the standard of houses and a third would not recommend their builder.
