My mini marathon experience

On your marks...get set....go!!!

The cheering fans, the monuments of London towering over you, the discarded crushed water bottles....

And that's only some of the many memories I have from competing in last year's Mini London Marathon - a race for under 18 year olds which takes place alongside the annual London Marathon.

Now I'm running it for the second year, again representing the London Borough of Brent as I won the qualifying trial.

The event is open to 11-17 year olds athletes from all over England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, and includes teams from the 33 London Boroughs.

There are six different races for boys and girls and different ages and a wheelchair race.

The amazing and unique thing about the Mini London Marathon compared to other 'mini' races for kids, like the Great North Run, is not only that it is on the same day as the main race so you get the gathering crowds cheering you on, but also that it is the same last five kilometres of the ACTUAL main London Marathon course.

So you get to run past all the best bits, including running past Buckingham Palace, down Embankment, and past the London Eye just like all the elite and fun runners.

And we do it first!

The course is three miles long, stretching from London's Old Billingsgate to The Mall.

The course also goes past Big Ben and as my race was the last of the junior races, I ran past Big Ben chiming 10am, which was definitely one of the things I remember the most clearly.

My experience of competing in last year's mini marathon was truly amazing and inspirational and so I can't wait for this year and being part of the 31st London Marathon!
