David Dimbleby was joined for the interactive debate by Peter Hain MP, Francis Maude MP, Susan Kramer MP, Marie Claire editor Marie O'Riordan, and film director and food critic Michael Winner.

Peter Hain MP

Title: Northern Ireland and Welsh Secretary

Career: Formerly leader of the House of Commons, Peter Hain became Northern Ireland secretary following the election.

He has also retained his position as Welsh secretary. Previously the minister for Europe, he was the government's chief negotiator on the European constitution.

A Young Liberal in his teens, he switched to Labour in 1977. Throughout the 1970s he was an active and prominent anti-apartheid campaigner.

Francis Maude MP

Title: Conservative Party Chairman

Career: Francis Maude was brought back to frontline politics by Michael Howard following the election.

Mr Maude has enjoyed stints at the Foreign Office, Treasury and DTI under former Conservative administrations.

He was Michael Portillo's campaign manager during the Tory leadership election of 2001.

Susan Kramer MP

Title: Liberal Democrat

Career: Susan Kramer succeeded Jenny Tonge as the Liberal Democrat MP for Richmond Park at the general election.

She previously served on Ken Livingstone's Transport for London board on the Greater London Authority.

She was the Liberal Democrat London mayoral candidate in 2000.

Marie O'Riordan

Title: Editor, Marie Claire

Career: Marie O'Riordan has been the editor of the popular female monthly magazine Marie Claire since 2001.

She is credited with an exclusive Downing Street feature which included pictures of Mrs Blair sitting on the matrimonial bed having lip gloss applied by her lifestyle adviser Carole Caplin.

Marie was also the first editor to put a man on the front cover of a woman's glossy magazine.

Michael Winner

Title: Film Director and Food Critic

Career: Michael Winner started directing films at the age of 25.

He worked frequently with Charles Bonson on the controversial Death Wish films. More recently Mr Winner has been associated with his Sunday Times restaurant column.

Mr Winner founded the Police Memorial Trust after the shooting of WPc Yvonne Fletcher and this year a memorial was unveiled in honour of police offers killed in the line of duty.
