Most candidates in South West support fox hunting ban

Most candidates standing for the five main parties in the South West would support the hunt ban in a free vote, an exclusive survey for The Politics Show reveals.

Prompted by David Cameron's confirmation that a Conservative government would offer a free vote if elected, The Politics Show asked the region's 110 candidates what they would do if given that opportunity.

Of the 103 candidates who responded from the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Labour, UKIP and the Green Party, 53 (51.4%) said they would retain the Hunting Act.

Thirty candidates (29%) said they would vote to repeal the Act, eight (7.7%) said they would abstain, and 12 (11.6%) were undecided.

Of the 23 Conservatives who responded, 18 would vote for repeal, two would abstain, and three were undecided.

The 22 Labour candidates who responded were unanimous in saying they would vote to retain the legislation. So were the 15 Green Party candidates.

Of the 20 Lib-Dem candidates who responded, three said they would vote for repeal, 13 said they would vote to retain the Act, and four were undecided.

Nine of the 23 UKIP candidates said they would vote to repeal the legislation, three would vote to retain, six would abstain, and five were undecided.

Election issue

Some candidates said they would want a referendum of constituents on the hunting issue and would abide by the result, meaning that, for the purpose of the survey, they were undecided.

Others protested that the scenario presupposed a Conservative victory - an electoral outcome that they were working hard to prevent and unwilling to contemplate.

The candidates who did not take part had been contacted repeatedly but did not respond. These candidates are listed as 'not known'.

Several Conservative candidates were initially reluctant to take part in the survey, saying that hunting was not an election issue, despite their party being the only one to promise a free vote on it.

Not a single Conservative candidate was available to debate the free vote on the South West Politics Show in the first week of the election campaign.
