What life is like in Vladmir Putin's 'modern autocracy'

Even though Vladimir Putin has stepped back from the Russian presidency, few doubt that he remains Russia's main leader.

After years of reporting all over Russia our correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes begins the first of his two special reports for Newsnight by considering why Mr Putin is so popular in Russia, and how the country has developed under his leadership.
