Gavin Esler's biography

From Gavin Esler:

David Mills

I told no lies, but I turned some very tricky corners, to put it mildly
David Mills

The story about David Mills, husband of the Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell, and his erstwhile client, the Prime Minister of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi, continues to make headlines around Europe without many people being able to say, hand on heart, exactly what is going on.

We'll be making sense of it all.

Women in prison

"You'd expect me to say it is about preventing crime but it's not - it's about keeping people alive". The words of Steve Hall, Governor of Styal prison in the BBC TWO documentary "Women on the Edge".

He's worried that the prison service is struggling to cope with the number of women prisoners trying to kill or harm themselves. We ask the minister in charge, is the women's prison service at breaking point?

Trouble at the top of the NFU

Is the man behind the 2000 fuel protests about to takeover at the National Farmers' Union?

And why is the environmentalist Zac Goldsmith backing his campaign?

Paul Mason takes a look at tomorrow's elections for the farmers' union leadership.

Bird Flu

To vaccinate or not to vaccinate? That is the question. And the answer? It depends. We'll explain.

Newsnight is at 10.30pm on BBC TWO.
