Money Box Live: Year end tax planning

Anita Monteith and Mike Warburton
BBC Radio 4's Money Box Live
Wednesday, 10 March 2010 at 1502 GMT On Radio 4 and Online

On Wednesday's programme Vincent Duggleby put your tax questions to a panel of experts.

A recent report by the House of Commons Committee of Public Accounts says that many older people pay more tax than they need to.

Some 2.4 million older people have overpaid £200m in tax on their savings income.

A further £250m tax has been overpaid due to discrepancies between HM Revenue and Customs records and those of employers and pension providers.

The report also says that HMRC does not know how many people miss out on the age-related allowances they are entitled to.

If you have a question about tax planning or making the most of your personal allowances Vincent Dubbleby and a panel of experts will ready help.

Are you entitled to tax-free interest on savings?

Who do you contact if your tax code is wrong?

Can you reclaim overpaid tax?

What is the value of your personal allowance?

Should you transfer any unused personal allowance to your spouse or civil partner?

Maybe you have a question about Capital Gains Tax

Can you deduct losses from gains made in the same or future years?

Which gifts are exempt from Inheritance Tax?

Are you aware of the changes to the rules about furnished holiday lettings?

Whatever your tax question Vincent Duggleby and guests were ready to help.

Vincent Duggleby was joined by:

• Anita Monteith, tax faculty technical manager, ICAEW

• Mike Warburton, Tax Director, Grant Thornton

Presenter: Vincent Duggleby
Producer: Diane Richardson
