Money Box Live: Tax and self assessment

Fingers hovering over a calculator
BBC Radio 4's Money Box Live
Wednesday, 6 January 2010 at 1502 BST On Radio 4 and Online

On Wednesday's programme Paul Lewis and guests took your calls about tax and self assessment.

It is the start of a new year and if you are intending to file your tax return online you need to submit this to HMRC by 31 January.

You may have savings and investments offshore and are unclear about your tax position. The HMRC deadline for declaring those assets has just passed. So you'll need to act quickly to avoid paying an even heftier fine.

And remember, if you think you may need to fill in a tax return but have not received a form, it is up to you to contact HMRC and request one.

Would you like advice about filling in your return?

Do you understand which records and information you will need to supply?

Are you aware of the tax allowance and reliefs available to you?

What happens if your income has dropped and you can no longer pay HMRC what you owe?

Are you entitled to a refund if you have overpaid tax?

If you have investments offshore what is the legal position as the HMRC deadline has just passed for declaring these?

Whatever your question, Paul Lewis and guests were ready to help.

  • Jane Moore, tax manager at the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England and Wales

  • Chas Roy-Chowdhury, head of taxation, Association of Chartered Certified Accountants

  • John Whiting, tax policy director, Chartered Institute of Taxation

Presenter: Paul Lewis
Producer: Diane Richardson
