In a HARDtalk programme broadcast on December 11 Zeinab Badawi talks to the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme.

Governments are currently meeting in Poland to work out a new global deal on climate change by this time next year.

Some countries are pleading poverty, saying the financial crisis has left money so tight, they need to concentrate on more immediate priorities like rebuilding their economies.

Achim Steiner is the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme.

He believes you can fight climate change and the economic downturn at the same time.

Zeinab Badawi asks him if the financial crisis couldn't have come at a worse time for his cause.

HARDtalk is broadcast on the BBC World News channel Monday to Thursday at the following times; 0430, 0930, 1430, 1830 (Middle East and South Asia only), 2130 and 2330 (except in the Asia Pacific region).

HARDtalk is also broadcast on the BBC News Channel Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 0430 and 2330.

All times are GMT.
