In a HardTalk interview first broadcast on Monday 13th August 2007, Stephen Sackur spoke to the former Prime Minister of India, V.P. Singh.

This month India and Pakistan celebrate 60 years of independence.

To mark this occasion HARDtalk has travelled to both countries to talk to leading politicians and statesmen about the direction both countries have taken following partition.

In the first of a series of interviews, Stephen Sackur talks to the former Indian Prime Minister, V.P. Singh, about Indian democracy, the role of the state and whether his efforts to try and eradicate poverty had any success at all.
