Europe's tourist boom
The Sardinian coast
Sardinia in Italy has taken steps to ensure sustainable tourism
BBC Radio 4's Crossing Continents Crossing Europe was broadcast on Thursday, 30 June, 2005, at 1102 BST.

The programme was repeated on Monday, 4 July, 2005, at 2030 BST.

International tourist travel is expected to more than double in the next 15 years. And Europe will be the top destination.

Everyone wants a cut of the lucrative cake, not least some of the new members of the European Union.

The low-cost airlines are helping them do that. But at what price?

In Crossing Continents Crossing Europe, Jonathan Charles travels from the Baltics to the beaches of Sardinia to examine how Europe can develop tourism without destroying itself.

Presenter: Jonathan Charles
Producer: John Murphy
Editor: Maria Balinska
