£17m - in small change

Roger Moore visited Mexico in January

Have you ever wondered what happens to the small change you tuck in an envelope and donate when leaving your holiday flight?

For the past 10 years, money collected by BA and passed on to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has raised £17m.

That's a lot of change and The Queen will be attending an event on Friday to celebrate a decade of achievement.

And lending his support to the fund, is former James Bond star Roger Moore - he's been working for UNICEF as a goodwill ambassador and supporter of the 'Change for Good' campaign.

Roger Moore was live on Breakfast talking about his charity work

The money raised has directly benefited children in 50 developing countries.

In January this year, Roger Moore travelled to Mexico City with his wife Kristina to visit several projects for street children which have been funded by donations to Change for Good.

How does change for Good work?

The Change for Good programme works through the collection of loose foreign coins on board British Airways flights.

Customers are encouraged by cabin crew to place their spare currency into special envelopes.

Once collected, these donations are transformed into positive help, by funding UNICEF's work to improve the lives of children across the world.

The success of the scheme has been helped along the way by the enthusiasm of BA staff who play their part by encouraging passengers to part with useless small change that's worth £3 on average.

There are more than 170,000 homeless children in Mexico's cities, with more than 14,000 working in one form or another.
