'The Lady in Red' has achieved sales of eight million
Chris De Burgh's success as a singer can be measured by the fact that he's performed more than 3000 concerts.

That's the equivalent of one show every three and a half days since 1975.

Now he's back with a new studio album and single and a tour of Europe which starts in May.

In 1986, Chris De Burgh released the love song 'The Lady in Red'.

The track reached number one in the UK and 24 other countries, and number two in the United States, projecting him to overnight fame.

De Burgh was born in Argentina to British parents and for much of his young life he travelled the world including Malta, Nigeria and Zaire.

He finally settled in Ireland where he lives today.

But his journey to success saw him play guitar to guests at his parents' hotel long before he was signed to a record company.

It also saw him study French and English at Trinity college, Dublin; but after graduating he returned to singing and looked to make a career of it.

After two years of performing in some unlikely venues including a hamburger restaurant and a hairdressers, he headed for London in search of a recording contract.

A&M records signed him in 1974, the following year he had his first number one with the song 'Flying' - in Brazil.

In the 30 years that have passed, Chris De Burgh has amassed 200 gold and platinum discs - 'The Lady in Red' alone has achieved sales of eight million.

Helmut Kohl and Boris Yeltsin count themselves as fans of Chris, and he was the only international artist to at the celebrations when East and West Germany were re-unified.

Chris's latest album 'The Road to Freedom' comes out on 15 March, there will also be a single from the album 'The Words I Love You' which is released this week.

His European tour gets under way in May, but fans in the UK will have to wait until October to see him live.
