Twenty-one year old Katie Hughes was stabbed at a party in Bangor

A 25-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 21-year-old woman in County Down on Monday.

Katie Hughes, a mother-of-one, was stabbed at an Easter house party at Park Avenue in Bangor.

Mark Wallace from Elmwood Drive in Bangor appeared at Downpatrick Magistrates Court on Thursday.

He spoke only to confirm his name and that he understood the charge against him. He was remanded in custody.

A detective told the court that he could connect Mr Wallace to the charge.

He was arrested shortly after the killing at a house overlooking a park in the town.

The gathering was a farewell party for some friends travelling to Australia.

Ms Hughes, from the Chatsworth area of Bangor, was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards.

District Judge Mervyn Bates said: "This is a very serious offence. You have been remanded in custody, there will be no bail application."

Mr Wallace will appear in court again on 22 April.
