City murder victim laid to rest

Maire Rankin funeral
Auxiliary Bishop of Liverpool Tom Williams led the Requiem Mass

The funeral has taken place in Newry of an elderly woman found murdered in the city on Christmas Day.

Maire Rankin's body was found at her Dublin Road home by a relative. The 81-year-old had suffered multiple injuries.

Hundreds of people attended Requiem Mass at the Church of Mary of the Assumption.

Auxiliary Bishop of Liverpool Tom Williams, a longstanding friend of Mrs Rankin's family, led the mass.

A neighbour of the pensioner has appeared in court charged with her murder.

Karen Walsh, 42, who lives next door to Mrs Rankin, denied any involvement in the killing.

She was remanded in custody to appear in court again next month.
