NI electorate to be registered

The system of registering voters has been changed
The Electoral Office has begun the annual process of registering people in Northern Ireland to vote.

The new system, which came into place last year, was heavily criticised amid allegations that thousands of people had been left off the register.

The need to register every year was brought in by the Electoral Fraud Act 2002.

In the past, one form was given to every household but now everyone has to register individually.

The register, published last November, showed a fall of 130,000 voters across Northern Ireland.

Poster campaign

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams said the system was "seriously flawed" claiming that nearly 190,000 people who should have been on the register had been left off.

The Electoral Office responded with a massive information campaign ahead of the Northern Ireland Assembly elections which had been planned for May but were subsequently postponed.

The process had to begin again.

Beginning on Monday and running until early October, canvassers will call at every home in the province.

A poster campaign will also be launched next week aimed at informing everyone, but particularly aimed at young people.

The new register will be published on 1 December.
