Demonstrators upset at what they believe are rigged presidential election results have clashed with security forces in Iran's capital, Tehran.
A massive security presence involving thousands of police prevented a big rally by supporters of defeated candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi planned for Enghelab Square in the centre of the city.
The police broke up smaller groups of demonstrators who managed to assemble, using batons, tear gas and live rounds. Some protesters threw stones at the security forces.
Black smoke rose over parts of Tehran from vehicles, such as this bus, or debris that was set alight.
The demonstrators defied an ultimatum from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei for an end to a series of protests against the 12 June election that saw President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad re-elected in a landslide victory.
