Israel has continued its air strikes on the Gaza Strip, attacking what it says are targets linked to the militant Hamas movement.

Bombed government complex in Gaza City

At least 16 bombs were dropped on five buildings in a government complex in Gaza City, destroying them, setting fires and sending rubble flying.

Israel heavy armoured vehicles near Gaza

Israel has massed heavy armoured vehicles on the edge of the Gaza Strip in preparation for possible ground operations. Thousands of reserve troops have also been called up.

Injured Palestinian man taken to hospital

Palestinian casualties include both Hamas members and civilians. More than 1,000 people have been wounded and there have been some 360 fatalities.

UN humanitarian officials criticised Israel for bombing heavily populated areas in Gaza where civilians would inevitably suffer. Israel accused Hamas of hiding among civilians.

Wounded Palestinian being treated in Cairo

Some medical cases have been taken to the Egyptian capital Cairo. Egypt itself has been subject to popular anger in other Arab countries for complying with Israel's blockade of Gaza.
