Rome took a step back in time on Sunday as the city marked the anniversary of its legendary foundation.
Legend has it that Rome was founded on 21 April, 753 BC by the twin sons of the war god Mars, Romulus and Remus.
The traditional pagan festival is known as the Christmas of Rome.
Ornate costumes brought the history of the Roman legions and centurions back to life.
Troops paraded along the Fori Imperiali avenue, with the ancient Colosseum providing the perfect backdrop.
But the armour made it hot work for some in the Italian sun.
Luckily, modern facilities were on hand to provide relief to the troops.
Ancient and modern: The spectacle provided a photo opportunity for tourists in the capital.
