In pictures: Anger in Kenya's parliament

Kenyan lawmakers have clashed in parliament, as they met for the first time since disputed presidential polls to elect a new Speaker.

Opposition MPs demanded an open ballot, fearing the secret vote could be rigged by pro-government deputies.

MPs backing President Mwai Kibaki dismissed the claim. Eventually, both sides agreed to cast secret ballots into a transparent box.

It was the first time main opposition leader, Raila Odinga, had been in the same room as Mr Kibaki since December's polls, which the opposition says were rigged.

People across the country watched as opposition Speaker candidate, Kenneth Marende, was elected after three tense rounds of voting.

Opposition supporters in Nairobi drew a symbolic coffin for Mr Kibaki. The president denies any wrongdoing over last month's polls.

Security was tight around the parliament building, amid fears of more violence. More than 600 people have been killed since the elections.
