In Pictures: Cutty Sark

Eight fire crews battled to cope with the blaze, which began shortly before 0500 BST.

Much of the 1869 tea clipper had been taken away as part of a £25m restoration scheme currently taking place.

The 138-year-old ship is a major landmark in the capital, included in the route for the London Marathon.

An extensive refurbishment programme has been going on to restore and preserve the famous vessel, which has been closed to visitors.

The conservation project was taking place to halt the corrosion of the ship's iron framework.
