Tony Blair arrived in Baghdad, unannounced, at the start of his seventh and probably final visit to Iraq as prime minister.

After arriving at Baghdad Airport, Mr Blair boarded a helicopter to fly to the city's heavily fortified Green Zone.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki welcomed Mr Blair to the Green Zone, which was hit by mortars shortly before his arrival.

At a press conference Mr Blair insisted progress was being made in Iraq, in spite of the violence engulfing the country.

In an emotional address in Basra, Mr Blair said 'thank you' to British troops.

Mr Blair chatted to troops over tea and biscuits. Minutes later mortars rocked the British Army headquarters in Basra. No-one was hurt.
