Many councils in England held local elections on Thursday with some voters like Sandra Miller and Angela Southward from Dorset finding unusual ways to reach their polling station.

Half the councils counted the votes overnight while others waited until Friday to find out who had won.

There were celebrations by Tony Egginton (centre) and his supporters when the Mansfield Independent Forum candidate won a second term as the town's mayor.

Elsewhere, the Lib Dem leader of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Mary Rose Gliksten, looked shocked when she lost her seat as the Tories swept to victory.

Labour and BNP candidates watched the count in Leeds which took place on Friday.

Tory leader David Cameron celebrated in Chester where his party won control of the council.

Sir Menzies Campbell in Eastbourne

And Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell joined colleagues in Eastbourne where they took control from the Tories, but it was a bad day overall for the party.

Despite Labour losses, Prime Minister Tony Blair said the results provided "a perfectly good springboard" for Labour to win the next General Election.
