The wonders of ancient Rome have been recreated in nearly 200 sand sculptures in Brighton.

Sixty sculptors from around the world worked on the exhibition at Brighton Marina.

It is the second time the city has hosted the Sand Sculpture Festival, which opens on Thursday.

The pieces are made from 10,000 tons of river sand imported from Holland.

Most of the artwork is housed in an enormous tent to ensure it does not suffer any weather damage.

"Young" sand is used to make the sculptures as it has suffered little erosion and has an angular shape.

The Pantheon, the Colosseum and Trajan's Column are among the wonders of ancient Rome depicted.

More than 200,000 visitors are expected to see the sculptures during the summer.

The creators will be on hand to answer questions from visitors until Sunday.
