Global pop stars gathered in Lisbon for the annual MTV Europe Music awards, which opened with a performance by Madonna.

Green Day

US rock band Green Day beat acts such as U2 to the best rock award. They also won best album for American Idiot.

Borat

The ceremony was hosted by Ali G creator Sacha Baron Cohen, playing alter ego Kazakhstani Borat Sagdiyev.

The Pussycat Dolls

The Pussycat Dolls, who had a transatlantic hit with Don't Cha, performed despite receiving no nominations.

Coldplay

Coldplay were named best UK and Ireland act and took the best song award for their hit single Speed of Sound.

Shakira

Latin American singer Shakira beat Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, Alicia Keys and Missy Elliott to the best female title.

Gorillaz

Cartoon hip-hop act Gorillaz were best group, appearing as three-dimensional holograms to perform Feel Good Inc.

Robbie Williams

Winners were selected by global MTV viewers, who named Robbie Williams best male instead of Eminem among others.

Madonna and Bob Geldof

Live 8 organiser Bob Geldof was presented the Free Your Mind humanitarian award by Live 8 concert performer Madonna.

Sugababes

Other stars to present awards included chart-topping pop act Sugababes and Portuguese football star Luis Figo.
