A long-serving member of the BBC SPORT team, Tony Gubba has covered everything from World Cups to Summer and Winter Olympics in his varied career.
Born in Manchester in 1943, he started out on local newspapers in Lancashire, worked as a staff reporter for the Daily Mirror in Manchester, and as a newscaster for Southern TV in Southampton, before becoming a Liverpool-based BBC correspondent.
Gubba presented the BBC's Sportsnight programme from 1973-78, has commentated on a range of sports including cycling, ice skating, table tennis, squash and bobsleighing, but is perhaps best-known as a regular commentator for Match of the Day.
He has covered every World Cup Finals competition since 1974, and will be working on his eighth Summer Olympics in Sydney later this year.
A keen fly fisherman, Gubba also enjoys watching golf and football.
