A cultured midfielder for West Ham and England, Trevor Brooking is a long-serving football pundit and presenter for BBC SPORT, as well as being the current chairman of Sport England.

Born in 1948 in Barking, he joined West Ham as an apprentice in 1965 and spent his whole football career with the club, retiring in 1984 after making more than 600 appearances and scoring over 100 goals.

He was an FA Cup winner in 1975 and 1980, scoring the only goal of the latter match against Arsenal with a header.

Brooking made his debut for England in 1974 against Portugal, was capped 47 times and scored five goals. He played under four managers: Sir Alf Ramsey, Joe Mercer, Don Revie and Ron Greenwood. He retired from international football after the 1982 World Cup.

In 1989 he was appointed to the Sports Council as the representative of regional chairmen and later became Vice Chairman of the English Sports Council. He is now Chairman of the ESC's successor, Sport England. During the summer, he runs coaching courses for young players.

Brooking joined BBC Radio and Television in 1984 and is now one of the most respected analysts and commentators in football. He is a regular on Match of the Day and a regular host of the Monday night edition of Radio 5 Live's 5 Live Football.

Having been part of the BBC's successful coverage of Euro '96 and the 1998 World Cup Finals in France, Brooking will be part of the BBC team covering Euro 2000 in Holland and Belgium this summer.

In January 2000, he worked alongside Barry Davies as match summariser on BBC ONE's live coverage of Manchester United's games in the inaugural FIFA World Club Championship.

Brooking was awarded the MBE in 1981. At about the same time, another honour in recognition of his services to football was bestowed upon him when the West Ham local council named a road after him - Brooking Road. He received a CBE in the 1999 New Years Honours List.
