Sukur all set for Inter Milan

Turkish international striker Hakan Sukur has agreed a move to Italian giants Inter Milan from Uefa Cup champions Galatasaray.

The 28-year-old striker is expected to sign a three-year contract with the Serie A side, reportedly worth $7.5 million, but full details of the deal will only be revealed once the dust has settled on Euro 2000.

Sukur, who had a previous spell in Italy with Torino, has been the leading scorer in Turkish football for the past three seasons and last month helped Galatasaray to victory over Arsenal in the Uefa Cup Final.

He had been placed on the transfer list by Galatasaray who were unwilling to meet his pay demands and his departure would be another blow to a side that has already lost coach Fatih Terim to Fiorentina and striker Arif Erdem to Spaniards Real Sociedad.

Outrage

Sukur played as a lone striker on Sunday as Turkey lost their opening Group B match 2-1 to Italy.

A controversial penalty from Filippo Inzaghi settled the game in the Italian's favour, but the award of the spot-kick by Scottish referee Hugh Dallas has sparked outrage in the Turkish press.

The mass-selling Hurriyet newspaper labelled Mr Dallas, "The nasty Scot," while the Sabah daily reported, "The penalty that the referee invented broke the hearts of the Turkish team."

Turkish coach Mustafa Denizli also came in for criticism for his side's preparation in the run-up to Euro 2000.

Turkey had not played a friendly match for four months.
