Beckhams 'fail' to conquer States
David and Victoria Beckham
David and Victoria Beckham spent three weeks in America
As Victoria and David Beckham prepare to fly home from their three-week trip to the US, the country's press have branded their publicity tour a failure.

The New York Post went as far as printing the headline Don't Come Beck following their outings at high-profile events.

Although Victoria was a household name in the US during her days as Posh in the Spice Girls, her solo efforts have not made an impact.

And David's popularity around the world has not reached the States, where football is still a minor sport.

UK newspapers reported that Victoria and David had been the stars of the night as they presented a film award at the recent MTV ceremony.

But in fact US TV audiences did not get to see them as their part was cut from the broadcast and was only shown in European versions.

The Post added the Beckhams were "going home as anonymous as when they arrived".

Sports Illustrated executive editor Charlie Leerhsen dismissed their potential for cracking the US.

"Beckham may have a better shot at becoming one of those celebrities whose fame feeds off itself, although what they actually do is of no interest. A bit like Zsa Zsa Gabor," he said.

USA Today said the Beckhams had been able to "stroll the streets unnoticed".

"While some celebrities might relish anonymity, the English duo - wildly famous everywhere else in the world - aren't used to being ignored," it added.

New York publicist Bobby Zarem added: "If their purpose was to create and develop an awareness, they didn't accomplish it.

"They were almost gone before people knew they were here."

The Beckhams' US profile may rise with the publication of September's issue of Vogue magazine which is set to feature the couple on the cover, with photographs shot by celebrity snapper Mario Testino.
