BBC launches online sitcom
Writer's room page
Six writers will be invited to join the team
Aspiring writers have been offered the chance to work on a sitcom developed exclusively online.

Six applicants will be selected to create Cleaners, a BBCi comedy based around a group of late-night office cleaners.

This is a real adventure

Michael Jacob, BBCi
The stories will be mapped out and developed at a "virtual writers table", viewable to everyone but accessible only to the writers.

"For the first time on such a large scale the whole process from the initial plot outline to the final draft will be available for the public to see," a BBC press release said.

As the writing team makes decisions on characterisations, storylines and individual roles within the group, BBCi users can log on to www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom and view the conversations.

They can even become part of the process by adding their comments and ideas. Once a week, visitors will have the chance to chat with one of the writers.

'Adventure'

"This is a real adventure," said Michael Jacob, comedy development editor.

"We hope the result will be good for the writers taking part and entertaining for the people watching the script develop.

"It is a step into unknown territory, and I am excited about working with the team to produce a script we will all be proud of."

The writers will receive guidance from BBC development staff and advice from Fred Barron - creator of BBC One sitcom My Family.

Once the episode of Cleaners is completed, it will be read out by actors and streamed via BBCi.

The successful writers will be announced on 2 August and the scheme is due to end in mid-November.
