Spector is ordered back to court

Lawyers for rock producer Phil Spector say they fear he has been indicted by a secret grand jury for the 2003 murder of actress Lana Clarkson.

His legal team has been asked to bring the 64-year-old music pioneer to court in Los Angeles on Monday morning.

"I can't imagine any other reason to be there," said attorney Roger Rosen.

The indictment would enable prosecutors to avoid a hearing that would require them to show there is enough evidence to bind Mr Spector over for trial.

Prosecutors denied to comment on the case, which stems from the shooting death of Ms Clarkson, 40, at Mr Spector's Los Angeles home in February 2003.

Mr Spector was charged with murder last November, but his defence team had hoped to avoid a trial by challenging the evidence at a preliminary hearing scheduled for 16 December.

"Phil is very disappointed," said Mr Rosen on Wednesday.

"He felt strongly that there was a very significant possibility this case would be thrown out at the prelim, so he's very disappointed that he's lost that chance."

Ms Clarkson, star of such B-movies as The Barbarian Queen and Amazon Women on the Moon, was found dead in the foyer of Spector's 33-room mansion in the city's Alhambra district.

An autopsy report found she had been killed by a single gunshot after the weapon had been placed in her mouth.

The coroner's file showed that Ms Clarkson, 40, had alcohol and the prescription painkiller Vicodin in her system when she died.

In an interview with Esquire magazine, Mr Spector claimed she killed herself in a bizarre suicide that involved kissing the gun.

Prosecutors say police found blood and gunshot residue on Spector, as well as evidence that he had cleaned and moved the gun after the shooting.
