Eminem scoops MTV video awards

Eminem has won four awards at the US MTV Video Music Awards, with the rapper getting both booed and cheered by the New York crowd.

The Video Music Awards also featured an appearance from Michael Jackson, a standing ovation for former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and a tribute to the late TLC member Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes.

Other big winners were Detroit guitar band The White Stripes, who won three awards, along with female singer Pink and band No Doubt, who both won two.

James Brown at the MTV Video awards

The ceremony was moved forward this year so it was not too close to the 12-month anniversary of the 11 September attacks on New York and Washington.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band kicked off the show with a poignant performance of his new single The Rising, which touches on the emotions of 11 September.

However, the sombre atmosphere did not last for long.

At Radio City Music Hall, host Jimmy Fallon lampooned nominees by spoofing their videos, before in a surprise appearance the Godfather of Soul James Brown sashayed on stage.

Confusion reigned over the appearance of Michael Jackson, who was being fêted by Britney Spears as her "artist of the millennium" on his 44th birthday.

Jackson gave a speech, clearly under the impression he was being given an award for artist of the millennium.

But an MTV spokesman in New York told BBC News Online there had been a birthday gift but no such award even existed, a stance contradicted by the music station's own website,

Indeed Jackson had picked up what looked like an award and gave a seemingly prepared speech.

"When I was a little boy growing up in Indiana if someone told me I'd be getting the artist of the millennium award, I'd have never believed it," Jackson said from the stage.

Eminem was booed after winning the award for best male video for Without Me - in which he dressed as Batman's sidekick Robin.

TLC had emotional memories of Lisa Left Eye
After accepting the award from one of his frequent targets, Christina Aguilera, he announced that techno artist Moby was "a girl".

"Yeah, keep booing," Eminem said, as the audience began to boo.

Appearing to look in Moby's direction, he added: "I will hit a man with glasses."

The audience later cheered Eminem when he won the video of the year award, again for Without Me.

This year's show paid special tribute to the city. Mr Giuliani received a standing ovation when he came out to thank the music industry for its support of New York after the attacks.

Poignant song

"You've helped to raise money for the victims of 11 September," he said.

"Tonight your being here is yet another expression of your support for us, and all of us in New York City appreciate that very much."

Then Sheryl Crow sang a song dedicated to New Yorkers; during the performance, images of residents were shown, and at the end, the trademark I Love NY symbol emerged.

Also emotional was MTV's tribute to TLC, who lost Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, in a car crash in Honduras last year.

After presenter Carson Daly announced a $25,000 scholarship in Lopes' name, surviving group members Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas came on stage and cried.

"This is so hard because it's a reality check because there's only two of us up here, and she's so missed," Thomas said.

"We know that Lisa's smiling, and we just hope she can be part of us right now."

There was a rare performance on the night from Guns 'n' Roses, as well as a number from rapper P Diddy.

Many of the guests attended his party at Manhattan's exclusive Cipriani restaurant.

He had warned his guests to turn out immaculately in their "flyest" designer clothing and promised goody bags at the end of the evening worth thousands of dollars.

And restaurant manager Phil Spinner said the guests had not disappointed.
