My Sweet Lord was the subject of a court battle

The late Beatle George Harrison has topped the UK singles chart with a re-release of his 1971 single My Sweet Lord.

It has the unusual distinction of being the second number one by a deceased star in two weeks, following Aaliyah's More Than A Woman.

The profits from Harrison's single are going to the Material World Charitable Foundation, a charity set up by the musician in 1973.

The record company, EMI, said the single's re-release was "due to public demand" after Harrison lost his fight against cancer on 29 November in Los Angeles, at the age of 58.

My Sweet Lord was the cause of a court battle, in which Harrison was successfully sued for plagiarism by the publishers of The Chiffons' 1964 hit She's So Fine.

An EMI spokesman said on Sunday: "We are very happy that the reissue of My Sweet Lord continues to spread George Harrison's music and message around the world."

It was especially appropriate that a charity set up by the musician would benefit from the hit, he added.

The top three singles are all new, with Pink's Get The Party Started in second position and Christina Milian's AM to PM at number three.

Aaliyah's More Than a Woman slides four places to number five.

There are no new entries in the UK album top twenty.

The Stereophonics' Just Enough Education To Perform remains at number one, with Robbie Williams and Gordon Haskell changing places in the top three.

Robbie's Sing When You're Winning moves up one to number two, while Haskell's Harry's Bar drops to three.

Nelly Furtado's Whoa Nelly has jumped to number six from 18.

And two of last year's biggest sellers are still in the charts: Dido's No Angel remains at number five, and David Gray's White Ladder is at number 19.
