Former Baywatch star David Hasselhoff has been named international star of the year at the Bollywood movie awards in Atlantic City in the US.

He received the award because his shows, including Knight Rider, are among the most popular on Indian TV.

Hasselhoff has also enjoyed success as a singer, particularly in Germany where he continues to tour extensively.

Yash Chopra won best director for Veer-Zaara, which won best film and best actor for Shah Rukh Khan.

"Whether it's comedy or romance or action, film should touch your heart," said Chopra when accepting his award on Saturday.

Other awards went to Rani Mukherjee, who won best actress for her role in Hum Tum. The actor Shammi Kapoor won the lifetime achievement award.

The ceremony was held in the US to boost the appeal of Indian films among non-Indian audiences abroad.

The industry makes about 1,000 movies a year and has a large and loyal fanbase at home and among Indians in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

But in the US, few Indian films, with their tradition for song and dance and melodrama, prove a commercial success.

But, when accepting his award, Kapoor said the improved technology now being used in the Indian film industry was leading to a better quality of movie.

"They're getting to be more topical. They aren't the happy, happy movies of yesteryear," he said.
