Actress Julia Roberts has given birth to twins more than a month early.

The girl and boy, called Hazel Patricia and Phinnaeus Walter, are the first children for the Oscar-winning star and were not due until early January.

She gave birth in California on Sunday and "mother and babies are doing great", publicist Marcy Engelman said.

The Pretty Woman and Erin Brockovich actress married cameraman Danny Moder in 2002. Roberts was confined to bed last month after early contractions.

The complications meant she was unable to make public appearances to publicise her new films Closer, a romantic drama, and heist sequel Ocean's Twelve.

But she did phone interviews for Closer, saying: "I'm enormous," and adding of the babies: "They're bionic. It's pretty amazing."

There are no hints as to why she chose those names.

Roberts, 37, has been one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood for 15 years since making the breakthrough in Mystic Pizza, Steel Magnolias and Pretty Woman.

She has also starred in Flatliners, The Pelican Brief, Notting Hill and Runaway Bride, and won her first Oscar for Erin Brockovich in 2001.
