Edinburgh Fringe Firsts announced
The Devil's Larder
The Devil's Larder is being staged at Debenhams' Edinburgh branch
The first five Fringe First awards of the 2005 Edinburgh Festival have been announced by the Scotsman newspaper.

US troupe The Riot Group have been recognised for their Switch Triptych show, as has the Traverse Theatre for its comedy East Coast Chicken Supper.

Children of the Sea and The Devil's Larder - at the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Edinburgh branch of Debenhams respectively - are also awarded.

Solo show Give Up! Start Over! at the C venue is the fifth and final recipient.

The Fringe Firsts were established in 1973 and are now the festival's most prestigious prize for new drama.

The awards are announced weekly during the festival to any new show that has had no more than six performances in the UK prior to the Fringe.

"The choices have been particularly tough so far this year, with little consensus in the first week," said Andrew Eaton, arts editor of the Scotsman.

This year's panel includes theatre critics Joyce McMillan and Mark Fisher and arts journalist Jackie McGlone.
