The son of Oscar-winning actor Michael Douglas has been denied bail by a judge in New York.

In January Cameron Douglas, 31, admitted to possessing heroin and dealing large amounts of methamphetamine and cocaine.

He was arrested in July 2009 at a hotel in Manhattan. If convicted he faces a minimum 10-year prison sentence.

Douglas has appeared in several movies, including It Runs in the Family, also starring his father and grandfather.

Prosecutors said he has signed a plea agreement, but gave no further details.

The charge stems from allegations that Douglas's girlfriend tried to smuggle him heroin in an electric toothbrush while he was under house arrest.

His mother is Diandra Douglas, who was married to Michael from 1977 to 2000. Douglas married actress Catherine Zeta Jones later that same year.
