How Skippy the bush kangaroo came to talk

When Skippy, the Australian TV series about a crime-busting kangaroo was broadcast in the late 1960s, it soon became a hit around the world.

The heroic marsupial's ability to talk was vital to the storyline, so programme-makers developed the unique Skippy clicking sound, as well as elaborate ways to make a kangaroo look like it was talking.

Skippy: Australia's First Superstar, a documentary about the kangaroo will be broadcast on BBC 4 on Tuesday 16 February at 9.00pm.
