Pixie picked for MTV new act gong

Pixie Lott
Lott flew to Berlin earlier this year to launch her debut album

Teenage star Pixie Lott has been named best new act in the UK and Ireland and will represent them at the MTV Europe Music Awards next month.

The 18-year-old singer was picked ahead of Florence and the Machine, La Roux, the Saturdays and Tinchy Stryder.

She and 21 other acts from the rest of the continent are now eligible for the best European act prize.

A shortlist of five will be drawn up ahead of the awards ceremony, to be held in Berlin on 5 November.

Lott, who released her debut album Turn It Up last month, has two other MTV nominations this year.

Her first two singles, Mama Do and Boys and Girls, were both number one hits in the UK.

Artists confirmed to perform at the Europe Music Awards include Foo Fighters, Green Day, Leona Lewis and Shakira.

Singer Katy Perry will return to host the event following her flamboyant appearance at the 2008 ceremony in Liverpool.

US artists lead the field this year, with Lady Gaga and rockers Kings of Leon receiving five nominations each.

Of the 13 awards up for grabs, 11 will be selected by MTV viewers.
