Carlisle to join Hairspray cast

Belinda Carlisle and Phill Jupitus
The new cast will open on Monday 26 October

Singer Belinda Carlisle and comedian Phill Jupitus are joining the London cast of musical Hairspray, its producers have announced.

Carlisle, 52, who had a series of UK hits in the late 1980s, will play TV station controller Velma Von Tussle.

Jupitus, 47, will take over from Brian Conley as Edna Turnblad, the heroine's mother, in the West End show.

The new cast, which will also include Last Choir Standing judge Sharon D Clarke, will open on 26 October.

The show, based on a 1988 film by US director John Waters, tells the story of an overweight young girl growing up in 1960s Baltimore.

The West End production, which opened in October 2007, won four Olivier awards in March 2008, including best musical.

Michael Ball, playing the role Jupitus will take on, also won best actor.

Producers of the musical have also announced the introduction of Sunday performances from 8 November.
