Beyonce to perform at MTV awards

Beyonce has been nominated for nine awards

US pop star Beyonce Knowles will perform at the annual MTV Video Music Awards, which is being held next month in New York.

The 27-year-old is up for nine awards at the ceremony - including video of the year - and will perform her latest hit single Sweet Dreams.

Beyonce's husband Jay-Z, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Green Day, Pink and Muse have also been lined up to perform.

Last year's host, comedian Russell Brand, is back for a second time.

The British star caused controversy at the 2008 event, by referring to then-US President George W Bush as a "retarded cowboy fella".

However, MTV have asked him back and he has already recorded an online trailer with Britney Spears publicising the show, which is being held at New York's Radio City Music Hall on 13 September.

Last year, Spears collected three prizes for her track Piece of Me at the annual awards show.
